Shortly before 12:00 PM the fire at the city landfill was extinguished.

At 2:12AM on Wednesday, April 6, a landfill fire was confirmed at the City of Iqaluit landfill.
Nine City of Iqaluit fire fighters and seven public works staff along with three water trucks responded to the fire. Due to the inclement weather, the Iqaluit Airport has provided the City with a mobile command post, to provide relief to the City fire fighters and ensure the have a secure area to stay warm and hydrated.

The City of Iqaluit would like to remind residents that the water supply for Iqaluit is stored in the Lake Geraldine Reservoir, and a limited amount is available each year, prior to thaw. We all need to use these resource with care and reduce water usage where possible. Below are some Water Wise Tips that resident’s can do, to help reduce water consumptions:

The City of Iqaluit would like to advise residents of a road closure. Ataani Lane will be closed to thru-traffic for construction (map below).
The closure will going into effect Monday, April 4 at 10:00 AM. An update will be provided once the road is reopened.
Residents along this road will still be able to access their homes.
The city of apologizes for any inconvenience and thanks you for your understanding.

The City would like to remind residents that effective March 31st, 2022, all individuals ages 5 years and 3 months to 12 years wishing to enter a City facility for any reason must also be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This means that all visitors to City facilities, ages 5 years and 3 months or older are now required to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to gain entry.

On April 1, 2022 the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, announced federal funding, under the Disaster and Mitigation Adaptation Fund, in the amount of $214
million to ensure the safety and reliability of the City of Iqaluit’s long term water supply system.
