Demographics

Iqaluit, is the largest community in Nunavut, with a population more than 7,740 (2016 census).  Arviat is the second largest community with a population of approximately 2,657 (2016 census). Eight other communities, including Cambridge Bay and Rankin Inlet, have populations over 1,000 people. Approximately half of Nunavut's population resides in the Baffin region.

Iqaluit encompasses an area of about 52 km2 and has the highest population of Inuit (3900) of all Canadian cities over 5000 people. English and Inuktitut are spoken regularly in Iqaluit. While 92% of people speak English, only 45% identify it as their mother tongue. Another 46% identify Inuktitut as their mother tongue.
