Hot Spot at Landfill – Crews on Site
April 28, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
At 9:30 PM on Wednesday, April 27, a hot spot (isolated smoldering pocket) was confirmed at the City of Iqaluit landfill.
The Iqaluit Fire Department and Public Works staff responded to the hot spot with fire apparatus and water trucks. An excavator has also brought on site to assist with the situation.
An excavator has been brought on site and is currently working to expose and allow access to a significant hot spot.
Residents are asked to avoid the area of the landfill (Akilliq Road past the tank farm) as the road has now been closed, leading up to the landfill.
How this impacts City Services:
● The City of Iqaluit landfill will be closed to the public today.
● There will be no water delivery on today. Residents on trucked water are asked to conserve water.
● Garbage collection will continue without interruption.
● Sewer services will continue without interruption.
The response is ongoing. An update will be provided once available.
