The Iqaluit City Council has extended the state of emergency due to the local water crisis effective as of 12 a.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2021.
During a City Council meeting on Tuesday, October 19, Council approved the extension of the state of emergency. CAO Amy Elgersma will continue to act as the Municipal Emergency Management Coordinator.
In a state of emergency, the Emergency Measures Act allows the City to "do any act and take any measure the municipal Corporation considers necessary".
On behalf of the City of Iqaluit and Iqaluit City Council, Mayor Kenny Bell offers his condolences on the recent passing of Iqaluit’s long-time community member, Margaret Gardener.
“We are greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Gardner, who was a long-time resident in Iqaluit, and a pillar to our community,” said Mayor Bell. “My condolences go out to her family, friends. Margaret was a special lady, and one that will always be remembered in our community.”
Bottled water distribution centers are intended to provide residents with drinking water; businesses may attend the Water Depot located next to the library, to secure potable water for their business related needs.
At this time, the City of Iqaluit is asking local businesses and organizations to collect their own potable from the water depot (library) while the Do Not Consume Advisory is in effect.
The City of Iqaluit has potable bottles of water available for residents on Monday, October 18th and Tuesday, October 19th, 2021.
- Nakasuk School parking lot, from 4:30PM to 7:30PM
- AWG Complex parking lot, from 4:30PM to 7:30PM
Household limits will be in effect throughout the water distribution. We recommend that this water be used for consumption only.
The City of Iqaluit would like to advise residents on Trucked Services of a temporary change to the delivery schedule, while water is drawn from the Sylvia Grinnell River.
Until further notice, the three water trucks on the road providing water to those homes on Trucked Services will all start their deliveries in Apex, working their way back towards Iqaluit. Changing the route in this way has allowed for more efficient delivery, resulting in faster service to the community.
The City of Iqaluit will have potable bottles of water available for residents on Saturday, October 16th and Sunday, October 17th at the following locations:
- Arctic Winter Games Arena Complex from 1:00PM to 3:00PM or until water is gone
- Nakasuk School parking lot from 1:00PM to 3:00PM or until water is gone
