Hot Spot at Landfill – Update III

The City of Iqaluit’s Fire Response Team continues ongoing efforts to mitigate the risk of a hot spot recurrence at the landfill.

The initial flame and embers have been extinguished; the team is undertaking risk mitigation steps to prevent a possible flare-up, should there be any residual embers still active.

On Friday, April 22, 2022, Mayor Bell was involved in an incident at a local grocery store. Immediately proceeding the incident, the Mayor recounted the event on to the public on his personal social media channels. The Mayor shared that he was physically assaulted and reacted in defense of wellbeing.

The City of Iqaluit would like to remind residents that the new taxi rate of $8.75 goes into effect on Sunday May 1, 2022.

This rate increase is in accordance with Taxi By-law Amendment No. 926.

Hot Spot at Landfill – Update

April 29, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

 

The City is working with local contractors to bring materials on site, to aid with suppression of the hot spot.

The landfill will remain closed this morning. An update regarding re-opening will be provided once available.

The road to the deep sea port will remain closed for public safety. An update regarding re-opening will be provided once available.

Hot Spot at Landfill – Update
April 28, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The Iqaluit Fire Department crews responded to a hotspot in the landfill around 9:30 PM on Wednesday, April 27th.

A small 15ft x 15ft hot spot was confirmed. The Iqaluit Fire Department and Public Works crews mobilized hoses and water trucks while an excavator mobilized to expose the hotspot area.

Crews worked through the night and are continuing to work to open up and isolate the area.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

At 9:30 PM on Wednesday, April 27, a hot spot (isolated smoldering pocket) was confirmed at the City of Iqaluit landfill.

The Iqaluit Fire Department and Public Works staff responded to the hot spot with fire apparatus and water trucks. An excavator has also brought on site to assist with the situation.

An excavator has been brought on site and is currently working to expose and allow access to a significant hot spot.

Vaccine Mandate & Mask Wearing in Municipal Buildings

• Proof of vaccination is no longer required for the public to enter municipal facilities.
• Wearing of a face covering (e.g. mask) is required in all public spaces, within municipal facilities, for guests ages 2 and older.

The City of Iqaluit would like to advise residents of two motions carried by the Iqaluit City Council at the City Council Meeting #11 on Tuesday, April 26th.
