Road Safety
June 02, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit would like to inform its residents in respect to regulations under the Municipal Traffic Safety Bylaw 894, remind motorists of some basic road safety rules, and highlight frequent contraventions.
Please obey all posted speed limit signs. The speed limit within Iqaluit unless otherwise posted is 30 km/hr.
All motor vehicles must carry current and valid registration and insurance, this includes All Terrain, Utility Terrain Vehicles and Recreational Off-Road Vehicles that can be registered with the Government of Nunavut Motor Vehicles Division and legally permitted to be operated upon a roadway.
Helmet use is mandatory for all noted types, including any ATV 900kg GVW or that has an enclosed cab, roll cage, or other roof or cab type assembly.
Dirt bikes are not permitted to be operated upon municipal roadways unless it is registered, insured and equipped with a headlamp and tail light.
Uninsured and unregistered motor vehicles are subject to seizure and impoundment as well as fines levied under the Municipal Traffic Safety Bylaw.
The use of seat belts and child restraint systems are required at all times, unless exempted by a prescribed class of motor vehicle or prescribed class of drivers or passengers in motor vehicles under the Traffic Safety Act S. 146 (4) subsection (a), (b) & (c).
A driver shall not drive a vehicle while holding or using a handheld electronic device.
Passing on the right hand side upon a roadway is prohibited, unless there is a right turning lane provided. Driving on the shoulder or off the roadway to pass on the right is not permitted.
