Iqaluit Emergency Services Responds to Structure Fire

On Sunday, January 16, 2022 at approximately 4:30PM, Iqaluit Emergency Services responded to a call regarding a kitchen fire in an apartment building in the 900 neighborhood.

Firefighters arrived and quickly located the fire and extinguished it ensuring no spread to neighboring units. A functioning fire alarm and sprinkler system in the building prevented this fire from escalating while providing the occupants, and their neighbours, enough to time safely evacuate the building.

A water interruption will be taking place January 18th, 2022 from approximately 1:00PM to 5:00PM to allow for repairs.

Location of water interruption: Lower Iqaluit #’s 89-99, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106. 108, 109, 111, 113, 114. 116, 273

The City recommends that residents in these areas boil their water for one minute before drinking. Water can boiled, allowed to cool and stored in a covered container for later use.

Snowmobile and ATV use on Municipal Roads

The City of Iqaluit would like to remind residents that the operation of snowmobiles and All-Terrain Vehicles within the municipality and upon roadways requires valid registration and insurance.

Registration for snowmobiles is available through the City of Iqaluit for an annual $25.00 fee.

Registration for ATV’s are issued by the Motor Vehicle Registrar and available through the Government of Nunavut’s Motor Vehicles Division in Iqaluit.

The City of Iqaluit continues to work closely with the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health to monitor and respond as needed to the COVID-19 situation.

City offices at 1085 and 901 will be reopened to the public as of Monday, January 17th, 2022.
