Elders Recreation Assistant

Reporting to the Recreation Program Coordinator, this position works directly with Elders at the Elders’ Qammaq (Elders Drop-in Centre) assisting in the implementation of culturally relevant activities and programs for Elders.  The incumbent is responsible for maintaining a safe and inviting environment for Elders.  The Elders Recreation Assistant will also assist with the facilitation of meetings with the Elders Qammaq Society and administrative tasks as required. The incumbent will act as a liaison with community organizations and visitors to the Elders Qammaq. 

Qualifications:

You must have experience working with Elders in one of the following areas; organizing and leading recreation activities, working in a care facility, working as a care-giver, delivering support and assistance programs or similar. 

  • You must be able to communicate (verbally and written) in both English and Inuktitut and have a thorough understanding of the Inuit culture. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required; the Elders Assistant should be a person who demonstrates compassion and a caring attitude towards Elders and displays a positive attitude and sense of humour. 
  • The applicant must have strong teamwork skills; this position requires working in a group environment to plan and implement programming.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification is required. 
  • Desired qualifications include a diploma in recreation leadership, senior centre assistant, human services, or gerontology or similar.
  • Experience in safe food handling procedures is also an asset.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful candidate must successfully pass a criminal reference check and TB testing.

The hourly rate for this position is $25.84, plus benefits.
