Heavy Equipment Operator

Under the direction of the Roads Maintenance Foreman the Heavy Equipment Operator will safely operate heavy equipment which includes graders, wheeled dozer, front end loaders, back hoe, and dump truck with winter harness and plow. This position is also required to operate trackless sidewalk-plow, and other equipment as required by the department and the supervisor. This position will perform routine and seasonal maintenance on roads, walkways, trails, and perform daily operational checks of equipment.  The successful candidate must be able to work long hours, shift work, and in adverse weather conditions as required.

Qualifications, Skills, & Experience

  • Heavy Equipment Operator’s Certificate
  • 1-3 years’ experience in Heavy Equipment Operating
  • A valid class 3 driver license with airbrakes endorsement
  • A detailed knowledge of and aptitude for heavy equipment operation and maintenance. 
  • Experience in operating at least three pieces of heavy equipment such as a backhoe, loader, excavator, snow remover, dump truck, and grader

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience using an Excavator with hammer
  • The ability to communicate in English and Inuktitut
  • Additional certifications relating to this position

Equivalencies that include a combination of education, knowledge, skills and abilities to formal education may be considered.

The annual salary for this position is $58,807.11. The City of Iqaluit also provides an excellent benefit package including an annual Settlement Allowance of $20,907.43.
