The City of Iqaluit is currently bypassing all tanks in the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) while maintaining disinfection through Ultraviolet light and Chlorine. This bypass is expected to remain in operation until a permanent tank solution is implemented. The drinking water continues to be safe to consume.

• The raw water from Lake Geraldine is subject to Ultra-Violet primary and chlorine secondary disinfection followed by straining prior to being discharged to the City’s reservoirs and distribution system.
• The bypass is expected to remain in operation until the permanent tank solution is installed
• A team of engineering specialists were on site to assess the condition of the Water Treatment Plant concrete tanks

The City of Iqaluit together with the Department of Health would like to advise residents of Iqaluit that as of 4:00 PM on January 19, 2022, the City will be putting the multi-tank bypass into operation. As a result, residents are advised to boil all water prior to consumption, cooking and brushing their teeth.

River water is available inside the Elders Qammaq from 3-8pm daily from January 17 - 21 while flushing is going on.

The City of Iqaluit is advising residents that effective the 10 December, 2021 the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health has lifted its Do Not Consume Order, issued on October 12, 2021. This means that all piped and trucked water can now be used for all potable water uses. The water that is being produced by the Water Treatment Plant meets or is better than the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines.
How can it be non-detect if I smell petroleum hydrocarbons?
The human sense of smell detects the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons at a much lower concentrations than the human sense of taste and well before any technology capable of testing for petroleum hydrocarbons and well before any significant levels that would cause impacts to health.
What should I do if I smell fuel in my water?
Should residents experience any unusual odor and/or taste in the drinking water, such as fuel, the City encourages residents to follow the below steps first, prior to calling the City:
