Water, Trucked Services and Boil Water Advisory Update - Evening

February 5, 2023

Water has been restored to the Tammaativvik medical boarding home. As of now, all water mains are operational.

Public Works crews are currently checking and clearing problem areas in the sewer system, as a precautionary measure. They are also repairing two leaks in the piped water system. Please conserve water.

Iqaluit is now under a precautionary boil water advisory for only piped water customers. Starting tomorrow, both piped water service and trucked water service customers will be under the boil water order.

The boil water advisory for all residents will be lifted by Public Health following their tests. The City of Iqaluit will release a Public Service Announcement when the precautionary boil water advisory is lifted.

Trucked water services will resume normal operation starting Monday February 6.

Public Works crews would like to thank their Iqaluit neighbours and friends, who were kind of enough to bring coffee to staff on a very cold day. Public Works would also like to thank Nunavut Excavating for their professionalism in helping the City return to regular water service.

If you live in a rental unit and still have no water, please contact your landlord to advise them of the issue so they can contact a local contractor to clear the line.

If you are a homeowner, and still have no water, you will need to contact a local contractor to clear the line. Homeowners can file a claim with the City for this process at https://www.iqaluit.ca/content/filing-claim.

During a precautionary boil water advisory, the City recommends that all water for consumption is brought to a rolling boil for a minimum of one full minute.

It is recommended that all water be boiled for the following uses:

  • drinking;
  • preparing infant formulas;
  • preparing juices and ice cubes;
  • washing fruits and vegetables;
  • cooking; or
  • brushing of teeth.

Water can be boiled either in a pot or kettle on a stove or an electric kettle without an automatic shut-off.
