Weathering Change – Impact for Residents
November 13, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

Following our update on changes to severe weather protocols, the City would like to clarify what this means for residents, drivers, and road use during blizzards.

Under the new system:

  • The City may close its offices or suspend services during a weather event, such as snow removal, waste pickup, or water delivery.
  • However, this does not mean roads are officially closed. Residents should still use sound judgment and prioritize safety when deciding whether to travel.
  • The City may recommend staying off the roads during periods of poor visibility, high winds, or unsafe conditions. In some situations, a Full City Closure may still be issued, but only as a final step when significant operational disruption makes it necessary, such as     for large-scale snow removal and safety of the public and staff.

If you must be on the road, drive cautiously and ensure your vehicle is not obstructing snow clearing routes. Delays in service resumption are often caused by vehicles abandoned or parked along priority routes.

Residents on trucked services are encouraged to conserve water and reduce wastewater output during any service disruption.

This change gives more responsibility to individuals and businesses while allowing the City to focus resources on restoring essential services safely.

Stay tuned for Part 3 of this series tomorrow, where we will provide tips for businesses navigating this new approach.
