Water Pressure Impacts Following Power Outage

May 20, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit advises residents that water pressure may be affected in some areas due to an issue impacting a water booster station following a brownout earlier today involving Qulliq Energy Corporation power service.

The booster station uses programmable logic controllers, or PLCs, to manage equipment operations. During a brownout or power fluctuation, power may ramp down in a way that does not properly trigger the control system. This can create a frequency imbalance, which may affect sensitive controls and damage equipment.

The City has surge protection and backup generators in place; however, frequency-related electrical impacts can still affect PLCs and other control systems. City staff are assessing the issue and working to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

Residents may experience reduced water pressure or temporary pressure fluctuations while work is underway. The City thanks residents for their patience and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
