Waste Vehicle and Equipment Collection Program Update
October 9, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit is pleased to provide an update on the ongoing waste vehicle and equipment collection program. As of today, a total of 50 vehicles have been successfully collected, resulting in significant cost savings of $37,000 for the community. Additionally, 7 skidoos and ATVs have been collected, offering a further cost relief of $1,500 to residents.
In addition to this, the City continues to make progress in removing metal waste from the community. During the barge export process from September 4th to September 9th, 12,901.986 cubic meters of net metal waste cargo was loaded for export, representing approximately 1,688 dump truck loads. This work has made a significant contribution toward reducing the stockpiles of waste metal in Iqaluit. Photos are included with this announcement to highlight the remarkable amount of metals removed from the community.
The City of Iqaluit would also like to remind residents that the Waste Metal Removal Program for residential properties is still ongoing and will continue until November 7, 2024. This program provides an excellent opportunity for residents to dispose of large metal waste items such as vehicles, snow machines, and household appliances, with the added benefit of waived tipping fees and transportation assistance for eligible items.
At the same time, a coordinated campaign is underway with the City’s Municipal Enforcement to ensure as many vehicles as possible are collected before the program’s deadline. Municipal Enforcement officers will be reaching out to residents who may be in violation of municipal bylaws related to abandoned or derelict vehicles. This is a great opportunity for those affected to take advantage of the program and avoid having to cover disposal costs after the deadline.
Residents interested in the program are encouraged to contact the Public Works Department at 867-979-5630 or via email at b.shaimaiyuk-baines@iqaluit.ca to arrange disposal.
The City would like to thank the community for their continued participation in this program, which plays an important role in keeping Iqaluit clean and safe for everyone. Your efforts make a big difference, and we look forward to seeing even more residents take advantage of this initiative. Together, we’re helping to build a healthier and more sustainable future for our city.
