Statement from Council – Honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People
May 5, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

Today, Mayor and Council stand with communities across the country to recognize Red Dress Day, a national day of awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+).

This morning, Mayor and members of Council were honoured to attend the unveiling of new artwork from the RED collection, hosted by the Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council. We thank Qulliit for their continued leadership and advocacy, and for creating space to honour lives lost and voices still fighting for justice.

As part of today’s commemorations, a community march will begin at 5:15 p.m. from the Four Corners, followed by refreshments and reflection at the Elders’ Qammaq. We encourage residents to join in solidarity and support.

Red Dress Day is a time to reflect, to remember, and to act. The red dresses displayed across the country are not only symbols of those who are missing, but urgent calls for justice and change. Mayor and Council remain committed to supporting efforts that promote safety, dignity, and equity for all Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people.

We invite all residents to wear red in remembrance and solidarity — honouring those we have lost and supporting the continued call for justice.
