Spring Safety – Falling Ice, Snow, and Ice Conditions

April 24, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit would like to remind residents to take extra care during the spring melt period, as warming temperatures can cause ice and snow to slide or fall from roofs, eaves, and other elevated surfaces.

Falling ice and snow can pose a risk to personal safety. Residents are encouraged to stay aware of their surroundings when walking or parking near buildings, and to give space to rooflines, balconies, and overhangs where ice may be present.

Property owners are encouraged to check their buildings regularly and, where it is safe to do so, clear excess snow and ice to help reduce potential hazards.

Residents are also reminded that ice conditions on ditches, lakes, ponds, and other bodies of water may become unstable during the spring melt and can change throughout the day. Please use caution and avoid areas where ice conditions are uncertain.

The City also asks residents to be mindful of heavy equipment operating in the community as part of ongoing snow clearing. Please keep a safe distance and allow operators the space they need to work safely.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to speak with children about spring safety, including staying clear of areas where ice or snow may fall, avoiding waterways with uncertain ice conditions, and keeping a safe distance from heavy equipment.

The City of Iqaluit thanks residents for their cooperation in helping keep the community safe during the spring season.
