Responsible Pet Ownership and Community Safety
May 20, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement Department is reminding residents that responsible pet ownership is essential to the safety and well-being of our community.

In response to an increase in incidents involving loose animals, enforcement officers will be conducting more frequent patrols. While officers are taking action, the most effective way to reduce the number of animals at large remains proactive prevention by pet owners.

Loose animals pose a variety of risks: they can injure themselves or others, contribute to traffic accidents, cause property damage, and may spread disease. While the City understands that accidents happen, taking steps to secure your pet and prevent escapes is key to preventing these risks.

Pet owners are encouraged to ensure their homes and yards are secure, and to regularly check doors, windows, and fences for potential escape points. When walking animals, always use a secure leash and collar or harness, as even well-trained pets can act unpredictably. Pets should never be left unsupervised for long periods, especially when tied outside. Adequate exercise and mental stimulation are also important in preventing pets from trying to escape out of boredom.

All pets should also be properly identified. Animal licenses are available at no cost from the Municipal Enforcement office (building 1549) and are a vital tool in reuniting lost pets with their owners.

By taking these steps, residents contribute to a safer and more harmonious environment for everyone in Iqaluit.

If you see a loose animal, please report it during business hours to Municipal Enforcement dispatch at 867-979-5650. Helpful details include the animal’s description, location, and direction of travel.

Thank you for helping us keep Iqaluit safe.
