Response to Aggressive Dogs on Social Media
May 30, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit’s Municipal Enforcement Department has recently received community concerns regarding aggressive dogs within the municipality. Concerned residents who witnessed two dogs displaying aggressive behaviour toward people and other dogs submitted reports through social media and email.

Actions Taken

Municipal Enforcement officers responded promptly and conducted patrols in the affected areas. Both dogs were located—one primarily in the 700/1000 area and the other in the 2200–2700 area. Officers engaged with the owners or caregivers of the animals, and appropriate enforcement actions were taken in accordance with the City’s Domestic Animal Control Bylaw No. 924.

At this time, the City confirms that there is no ongoing threat related to these incidents.

Ongoing Safety Advisory

The City reminds residents that loose dogs can pose serious risks to public safety and animal welfare. Potential dangers include:
  • Injury or death due to vehicle collisions
  • Attacks by other animals
  • Property damage and scavenging
  • Unpredictable aggressive behaviour due to fear, protectiveness, injury, or other factors
