Respect Accessible Parking Spaces – Fines for Unauthorized Use
June 26, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit reminds residents and visitors that accessible parking spaces are reserved for individuals with disabilities who display a valid placard. Unauthorized use of these spaces is not only inconsiderate, it is a bylaw offence.
Under City of Iqaluit Bylaw 625: Traffic, Parking and Walkways, Section 3.3(k):
“No person shall park a vehicle on any portion of the highway designated as a disabled parking area by a universal handicap signage located above or to the side of the highway, except those vehicles displaying a disabled placard.”
Violations of this section are subject to a $75.00 fine.
The term “highway,” as defined in City Bylaw 625, refers to more than just public roads. It also includes places the public commonly uses for driving or parking vehicles, such as parking lots, whether publicly or privately owned. This means accessible parking rules apply in most locations, not just on city streets.
Accessible parking ensures safe and equitable access to essential services and public spaces. For many people with disabilities, these spots are not a convenience, they are a necessity. Misuse by unauthorized vehicles takes away access from those who depend on them every day to go about their daily lives.
Drivers are reminded to use accessible parking only when a valid placard is clearly displayed. Even brief stops in these spaces without authorization are not permitted. Respecting accessible parking is a shared responsibility and a simple way we can all help make Iqaluit more inclusive and supportive for everyone.
