Odour Concerns near Wastewater Treatment Plant

August 1, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit is aware of ongoing odour issues stemming from the Wastewater Treatment Plant and lagoon that have been noticeable in various parts of the municipality in recent weeks. We recognize the impact this has had on residents’ day-to-day lives and understand the frustration and concern it has caused across the community.

Odours are the result of seasonal temperature changes affecting the natural processes within the sewage lagoon. These occurrences are common with lagoon systems and can be influenced by multiple environmental and operational factors.

The City is in full compliance with the terms and conditions of its water licence, and all lagoon-related activities are being carried out within approved regulatory parameters. That said, we understand how unpleasant this experience can be. While the system continues to meet all regulatory requirements, the City is reviewing potential options for odour mitigation within the scope of our existing regulatory compliance commitments.

City teams continue to monitor the situation and are exploring ways to improve operations over time. These efforts remain in the early stages and will be guided by technical assessments, environmental regulations, and long-term planning considerations.

The City remains committed to responsible wastewater management and to keeping residents informed. Wastewater infrastructure plays a vital role in protecting public health and the environment.
