Mayor Awa Calls on Federal Government to Take Immediate Action on Inuit Child First Initiative

March 28, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit is urging Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) to provide immediate clarity and direction on the status of the Inuit Child First Initiative (CFI) for the 2025–2026 fiscal year.

Despite public commitments from federal ministers confirming the renewal of the CFI, ISC has yet to issue clear guidance to program administrators across the territory. As of March 18, officials from ISC indicated they had not received instructions on how to review or approve applications, including Iqaluit’s submitted request.

“This silence is unacceptable,” said Mayor Solomon Awa. “Our communities depend on this funding to support essential programs such as food vouchers, mental health services, and educational support. The lack of communication from ISC is causing confusion, distress, and uncertainty for families across Nunavut.”

On March 8, Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Gary Anandasangaree confirmed the renewal of the CFI. Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu reaffirmed that commitment on March 21. However, as of today, no actionable steps have followed these announcements.

“Let me be clear: this is about ensuring Inuit children receive the care and support they deserve—without delay, without red tape,” Mayor Awa added. “We are calling on ISC to honour the federal government’s promise and communicate with communities on the ground immediately.”

The City of Iqaluit remains committed to advocating for equitable support for Inuit children and calls on ISC to treat this matter with the urgency it demands.
