Informal Beach Road from Lower Base Closed
May 5, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit would like to advise residents that access to the informal beach road from Iglulik Drive in Lower Base, outlined in red below, has been permanently closed.

The access from Lower Base will be maintained as a driveway to Pump Station #1 (Building 1001) for City Public Works Staff only. No through-way traffic from the informal beach road to Iglulik Drive in Lower Base is permitted. The beach shacks on Inuit Owned Land will continue to be accessed from the beach road that connects to the Visitor’s Centre and Library (Building 220). The east-west snowmobile trail along the beach road and next to NorthMart will also be maintained.

The closed portion of road was an informal road that encroached on two privately leased lots in Lower Base. The through traffic on the informal road presented safety challenges for residents, snowmobilers, drivers, and pedestrians.
