Fire Department Key Box Program
February 23, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit Fire Department is encouraging residents and business owners to help improve community safety by installing fire department access key boxes on their properties.
Key boxes are especially recommended for businesses, apartment buildings, rental properties, commercial or industrial buildings, and any property with a monitored fire alarm system. These boxes allow firefighters to quickly and safely access a building during fire alarm activations or emergencies.
When responding to a call, time is critical. Without immediate access, crews may need to force entry to ensure everyone’s safety. A key box helps prevent delays and can reduce damage to doors and locks while firefighters work to investigate alarms and, if necessary, put out a fire.
In some situations, keyholders may be delayed or may not have the correct key. Having a secure key box in place ensures the Fire Department can gain entry without waiting, allowing crews to focus on protecting lives and property.
Key boxes should be installed near the main entrance in a visible and accessible location.
For security, only Fire Department officials can open these key boxes.
Key boxes are available year-round for $100 each. They can be purchased directly at the Fire Hall, and invoicing is available upon request.
By installing a key box, property owners are supporting faster emergency response and helping protect our community.
