COVID-19 and City of Iqaluit Updates – Recreation Facilities
June 9, 2020 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit continues to work closely with the Government of Nunavut’s Chief Public Health Officer to monitor and respond as needed to the COVID-19 situation.
In response to the continued easing of restrictions from the Chief Public Health Officer, Iqaluit Recreation is working closely with the CPHO to bring its facilities back online for summer programming.
City Recreation facilities will be re-opened in stages. City parks, playgrounds, trails and some outdoor recreation spaces have already been re-opened. The Baseball field is expected to be re-opened the last week of June. Confirmation of a firm date for the Baseball field will be provided no later than June 19th.
The Arnaitok Arena remains closed for the summer season.
The Arctic Winter Games Arena complex has been turned over to turf in preparation for the summer Sports Field season. Plans for re-opening are being presented to the CPHO for consideration and confirmation of a firm date will be provided on June 19th.
In-person Summer Day Camps have not yet been approved by the CPHO. Plans continue to be developed for alternative delivery formats. More information on Recreation Summer Day Camps will be made available on June 22nd, 2020. There will be no Swim Camp offered this summer.
The Aquatic Centre will also be reopening in stages. Phase one will include limited access to the pools, with the fitness centre and studio reopening for phase 2. Dates have not yet been confirmed for the re-opening, however it is expected that the facility will be opened at limited and/or altered capacity in early July. More information on the re-opening plans for the Aquatic Centre, with firm dates will be announced on June 26th.
Due to ongoing renovations at the Makkuttukkuvik Youth Centre, the facility will remain closed for the months of June and July. However, alternative outdoor programming for teens age 13-18 will be offered starting in July. The programming schedule will be made available on June 26th.
Canada Day celebrations will also be different this year due to physical distancing. Instead, a single-truck mobile concert with musical and dance artists will travel the roadways on Wednesday, July 1st from 11:00am to 3:30pm. We encourage residents to view the concert outside but close to home and to not gather in groups greater than twenty-five people. We recommend using masks when it is not possible to maintain social distancing of two-metres
We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience as we work to bring our programs back online for the summer.
