Closing Out the Summer Municipal Governance Series
September 9, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
This summer, the City of Iqaluit launched a public education series to help residents better understand how local government works and how to get involved in shaping our community.
Throughout the series, we explored how City Council makes decisions, how bylaws are created and applied in the community, how budgets are developed, and how Council and City staff work together to deliver services. We also looked at the roles of municipal and territorial governments, the importance of civic participation, and the many ways residents can get involved. These include voting, attending meetings, joining committees, or sharing feedback.
Iqaluit is a growing and dynamic capital city. As our population increases and services expand, it is more important than ever for residents to understand how decisions are made and how their voices can influence the future. Staying informed is one of the best ways to support a strong, responsive community.
We thank everyone who followed along, shared feedback, attended meetings, or took the time to learn more. As Iqaluit continues to grow and adapt, understanding how our local government operates remains essential for building a strong and connected community.
If you would like to learn more about other municipal processes such as infrastructure planning, elections, or how to propose new policies, we invite you to connect with us. We also welcome your ideas for future topics.
All PSAs from this series are available in Inuktitut, English, and French at www.iqaluit.ca.
This conversation does not end with summer. Local government works best when residents are informed, engaged, and heard.
