Building Civic Awareness with Nakasuk School
June 17, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit extends sincere thanks to the Grade 4 classes from Nakasuk School for joining us yesterday at City Hall for a special educational visit focused on municipal civics.

Throughout the sessions, students actively learned about the roles and responsibilities of the Mayor and City Council, how elections are conducted in Iqaluit, and how decisions are made during council meetings. The workshops also explored the difference between municipal by-laws and other types of legislation, including how by-laws are developed, debated, and passed into local law.

City staff were delighted to see such enthusiasm, thoughtful questions, and curiosity from young learners. Their interest in how the City operates demonstrates the importance of civic education at a young age.

As a token of appreciation and achievement, all participating students received a Certificate of Learning in Municipal Civics, recognizing their engagement and understanding of how local government works to serve the community.

The City of Iqaluit is committed to supporting youth education and encourages opportunities that build awareness, leadership, and civic responsibility in our future generations. We thank the staff and educators at Nakasuk School for helping make this visit possible and for fostering an early interest in community participation.

We look forward to welcoming more student groups in the future.
