Access to Informal Beach Road from Lower Base to Be Closed
April 20, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit would like to advise residents that access to the informal beach road from Iglulik Drive in Lower Base, outlined in red below, will be permanently closed. The closure will take effect on Monday, April 25, 2022.

The access from Lower Base will be maintained as a driveway to Pump Station #1 (Building 1001) for City Public Works Staff only. There will be no through-way traffic from the informal beach road to Iglulik Drive in Lower Base. The beach shacks on Inuit Owned Land will continue to be accessed from the beach road that connects to the Visitor’s Centre and Library (Building 220). The east-west snowmobile trail along the beach road and next to NorthMart will also be maintained.

The portion of road to be closed is an informal road that encroaches on two privately leased lots in Lower Base. One of the lots is undergoing redevelopment for a new Nunavut Housing Corporation housing project. The through traffic on this informal road presents safety challenges for residents, snowmobilers, drivers, and pedestrians.
