City of Iqaluit Mayor and Councillor Statements
April 22, 2020 (Iqaluit, Nunavut) – The City of Iqaluit’s first priority is its staff and residents. The City of Iqaluit continues to work closely with the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health to monitor and respond as needed to the COVID-19 situation.
The Coronavirus situation has rapidly, and fundamentally changed the way Iqalummiut work, play, shop, and socialize with one another. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought upon us unprecedented measures. For a community that is as closely knit as Iqaluit, we know that these precautions can be challenging; self-isolation and physical distancing can be very difficult, especially as we move into the spring season.
Iqaluit’s Mayor and a number of City Councillors offered words of advice and hope for Iqalummuit to help everyone get through these difficult times.
Councillor Stevenson stated: “[c]ities all over the world are having to take unprecedented steps to protect all their citizens from contracting the COVID-19 virus. We at the City of Iqaluit are strongly urging Iqalummiut to take these warnings seriously.” Councillor Lucassie reminded us that this is a global effort “…everyone all over the world is facing the same situation and people should not feel alone in this time of struggle.”
Deputy Mayor Brewster implored residents to follow established physical distancing guidelines, stating “If you MUST leave the house to shop for essential household items, please give the person in front of you 6.5 feet of space, and request 6.5 feet (2 metres) of space from the person behind you, in lineups at the store, post office, or anywhere else you go in public”.
Mayor Bell reminded us that empathy and kindness towards one another will help us prevail. “Everyone is reacting differently to the stresses Coronavirus has brought to us; while shopping or interacting with others please take a second, breathe and be nice to one another. We are in this together…wash your hands and be nice to each other”.
The City would like to thank residents for their continued efforts in taking precautions to prevent the spread of disease.
