COVID-19 and City of Iqaluit Updates

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE CITY OF IQALUIT, DEPARTMENT of RECREATION

March 23, 2020 (Iqaluit, Nunavut) – The City of Iqaluit’s first priority is its staff and residents.

The City of Iqaluit continues to work closely with the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health to monitor and respond as needed to the COVID-19 situation.

The Department of Recreation urges all residents to explore other recreation activities while the Recreation facilities and playgrounds are closed.

Iqaluit is a community that has a lot of outdoor opportunities for recreation.  Some things that you could do are:

  • Skiing
  • Sliding
  • Walking/Hiking
  • Hunting
  • Fishing
  • Fetching water from the river
  • Snowmobiling
  • Dog sledding
  • Snowshoeing
  • Walking the dog
  • Photography
  • Videography

Even outside you should maintain a safe distance (approximately the same length as a snowmobile, or the width of a car) from anyone you’re with.

The Recreation Department also recommends that residents:

  • Avoid groups- even out of doors
  • Refrain from high-touch recreational activities including hockey, shinney or outdoor soccer
  • Wash or sanitize their hands after touching communal surfaces
  • Stay home and inside if you feel unwell, especially if you are coughing, or have a fever.

We also encourage you to stay active inside too.  There are lots of exercises that you can do from home.  Check out the Iqaluit Recreation Facebook page for more ideas and some video examples of workouts and exercises that you can do.   We are also hosting workout sessions on Facebook live, so stay tuned and check out the schedule on our Facebook page.

There are lots of other things to do inside as well.  There are some great resources online for crafts and other things you can do at home.  Check out Recreation’s Special Programs page for ideas!
