Traffic Impacts and Road Closure – Niaqunngusiariaq Road

August 23, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit would like to advise residents of upcoming traffic impacts and a road closure affecting Niaqunngusiariaq Road as work continues on essential water and sewer infrastructure upgrades and preparations are made for paving.

On Monday, August 24, 2026, residents and drivers should expect intermittent traffic stoppages and lane closures in the project area while crews prepare the site for paving. Traffic will be directed through the work area when it is safe to do so. Drivers should expect delays, allow additional travel time, and follow all directions from traffic-control personnel.

On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a road closure will be in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Residents are advised that the location of the road closure will change during the day. The anticipated closure schedule is as follows:

·       Approximately 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Niaqunngusiariaq Road will be closed at Kangiq & Iniq Drive.

·       Approximately 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.: the closure will shift to the intersection of Niaqunngusiariaq Road and Saputi Road.

The changeover is expected to occur around 1:00 p.m.; however, the exact timing may vary as work progresses. Drivers must follow posted traffic-control signage and directions from crews, which will reflect the active closure and detour route.

Residents and drivers should be prepared for traffic delays and a change to the detour route during the day. Please allow additional travel time and use alternate routes where possible.

Two maps are attached showing the closure location, local-traffic-only areas, and detour route for each portion of Tuesday’s closure. Residents are encouraged to review both maps before travelling, as the road closure and required detour will change during the day. Detour signage will be adjusted on site as the closure location changes.

The City recognizes that this notice is being provided on short notice and that these traffic disruptions, particularly the changing closure on a major route, may cause considerable inconvenience. The City appreciates residents’ patience and cooperation while this essential infrastructure work is completed.

Access for local residents will be maintained where possible. For safety reasons, please stay clear of construction equipment and work areas and follow all posted signage and directions from crews.

The City thanks residents for their patience, cooperation, and understanding as this important infrastructure work is completed.
