Making Letter of Support Requests Easier
July 14, 2026 — Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit would like to let residents, community groups, and organizations know that Council has approved a new Letter of Support Policy.
Letters of support can help with funding applications, permit applications, and local projects. They are one way the City can show support for work that benefits Iqaluit and the people who live here.
The new policy is meant to make the process clearer, easier to follow, and faster when a request meets the eligibility criteria. In some cases, the Mayor may now sign a letter of support on behalf of Council without the request having to wait for a Council meeting.
That means a clearer path for applicants, fewer “who do I send this to?” moments, and a more straightforward process for eligible requests.
Requests will be reviewed to confirm that they meet the policy criteria, including whether the project benefits Iqaluit residents and aligns with City priorities.
Requests should be sent to the City Clerk at CityClerk@iqaluit.ca as early as possible, and no later than 14 days before the letter is needed.
Please include:
- A short executive summary of the project, program, or event, including timelines, target audience, funding sources, and partners, where applicable
- A draft letter of support
Some requests will still need to be reviewed by Council. This includes requests from government bodies, for-profit organizations, or commercial businesses, requests involving financial or in-kind support, certain research or permit applications, and projects that have not previously been supported by Council. Requests that need to be referred to Council may require additional time.
A letter of support does not commit the City to funding, in-kind support, permits, approvals, or the use of City resources unless those have been separately approved.
The City appreciates the work being done by community groups and organizations across Iqaluit. This new process is intended to make it easier for eligible projects to receive support letters in a timely way.
