Proper Disposal of Batteries and E-waste
July 10, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit would like to remind residents and businesses that batteries, electronics, and electronic devices must be separated from regular garbage when brought to the landfill.
Items such as phones, computers, e-cigarettes and vapes, household batteries, televisions, tablets, and other electronic devices can pose a fire risk when disposed of with regular waste. These items need to be handled separately to help keep landfill staff, emergency responders, residents, and our community safe.
When dropping off batteries or electronics at the landfill, residents and businesses are asked to clearly identify these items to the landfill shack attendant at the time of drop-off.
Batteries and electronics may be small, but they can create big problems when mixed with regular garbage. Taking a few extra moments to separate them helps protect landfill staff, firefighters, residents, and the community from preventable fires.
Iqaluit has had enough landfill excitement over the years, and no one is looking for any additional sequels. Properly separating batteries and electronics is one small way residents and businesses can help keep things safe and uneventful at the landfill.
The City thanks residents and businesses for doing their part to keep the landfill safe and running smoothly.
