Weathering Change – Impact for Businesses
November 14, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

As part of the City of Iqaluit’s new severe weather communication approach, we want to clarify what this means for local businesses and community organizations.

The City will continue to use a phased approach to closures. A Full City Closure remains an option, but it will only be used when significant operational disruption makes it necessary, such as during major snowfall cleanup or when safe operations cannot be maintained.

Here is what you need to know:

  • Businesses and organizations are encouraged to assess conditions and make their own decisions based on their own operations and the well-being of their teams.
  • We encourage all businesses, schools, non-profits, and service providers to have their own severe weather plans in place. These should include decision-making criteria for closures, staff communication methods, and safety considerations, as these   organizations are not automatically included in City service notices.

New Visual Format – See Examples Below

To improve communication during inclement weather events, the City has developed a new set of visual PSAs. These graphics use clear icons, consistent colours, and plain language to help residents quickly understand which services are open, limited, or closed.

Examples of these visuals are included below in this post.

All future weather-related updates will be shared in this format through:

  • City of Iqaluit Facebook: facebook.com/cityofiqaluit

  • Website: www.iqaluit.ca

Let’s work together to keep Iqaluit safe, connected, and moving forward, even in the toughest conditions.
