Loose Dogs and Public Health Risks
May 27, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit is reminding residents that loose dogs continue to be a concern in our community, contributing to a number of safety and public health risks.
Unattended dogs can cause traffic hazards, damage property, intimidate pedestrians, and increase the likelihood of injuries. They may also come into contact with other animals—including local wildlife. In the North, where foxes are known carriers of rabies, these encounters can pose a serious risk of disease transmission to both pets and people.
Municipal Enforcement continues its patrols and response efforts as part of the City’s ongoing work to support public safety and responsible pet ownership. Residents can help by making sure their pets are secure at home and leashed when out in the community.
Free pet licences are available from the Municipal Enforcement Office (Building 1549) and can help officers return lost pets home more quickly. Keeping vaccinations up to date is also an important part of preventing the spread of disease.
To report a loose dog, please contact Municipal Enforcement at 867-979-5650 during business hours. If possible, include a description of the dog, its location, and direction of travel.
We appreciate your support in keeping our neighbourhoods safe and healthy for everyone.
