New Property Tax Exemption Process
March 25, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit is introducing a new process for property tax exemptions for eligible organizations, effective immediately. Organizations seeking an exemption must now apply annually, instead of every four years. The exemption covers 100% of property taxes for eligible places of worship and non-profit organizations, excluding residencies. The total amount of exemptions granted each year is subject to an annual cap of $300,000.
Eligibility:
To qualify for a property tax exemption, an organization must either own the property or be responsible for paying the property taxes. Additionally, the property must be used as a place of worship (excluding residencies) or by a non-profit society registered under the Societies Act (excluding residencies).
Application Process:
1. Submit a Completed Application – eligible organizations must fill out and submit the prescribed application form to the City of Iqaluit.
2. Annual Renewal Required – approved exemptions must be renewed every year by confirming that the conditions for exemption remain unchanged.
Copies of the Property Tax Exemption Application Form are available on the City of Iqaluit’s website or can be picked up at City Hall – Finance Department.
