Iqaluit City Council Approves 2022 Budget
February 18, 2022- Iqaluit, Nunavut
On Tuesday, February 15th, the Iqaluit City Council approved the 2022 Budget.
“The 2022 budget will allow the City to focus on delivering high quality services and asset management, as well as the development of essential infrastructure projects. We must prepare our workforce for the challenges ahead. Changes and increases to compensation structures are included in the 2022 budget to ensure compensation matches or exceeds market rates for similar positions. Attracting and retaining qualified staff is essential to helping the City meet its strategic objectives”

“This budget reflects the City’s commitment to support community growth, but we can’t do it alone; long-term investments are needed from our Territorial and Federal Government partners to address the historic infrastructure gap that is holding us back. Reliable infrastructure is needed to improve the quality of life of our residents and support the economic growth of our City.”

The 2022 budget highlights include:
• Modernizing systems including the implementation of data management, asset management and improving payment options through the new website.
• Construction of a new Operations Centre for inventory management, equipment storage and staff offices.
• Installation of new street lighting for high-risk areas, to improve public safety.
• Allocation of over $2.9M in capital expenditures, to address requirements for essential work to the Water Treatment Plant, as result of the 2021 Water Emergency.
• Continuation of the annual Apex River pumping project to supplement the Lake Geraldine water supply.
• Increasing capacity of critical sanitary sewer sections.
• Construction of the Solid Waste Transfer Station and Landfill.
• Increasing the sanitation rates by two percent (2%), to prepare for the decommissioning of the West 40 landfill.
• Increasing the water/sewer rate by half a percent (.5%), to offset increases to utility costs.
• Increasing property taxes by three percent (3%), to generate revenue for the General Fund, which will support increased expenditures for services.
The budget is retroactive to January 1, 2022.
