Winter Roads are Coming – Time to Slow Down

October 15, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The temperatures are dropping, the days are getting shorter, and before long, snow and ice will

be back on Iqaluit’s roads.

We all know what that means: it’s time to switch back to winter driving mode.

As conditions change, remember that slippery roads mean longer stopping distances. Slow down, leave some extra room between vehicles, and give yourself a little more time to get where you’re going.

We know you have places to be. The good news is, in Iqaluit, they’re probably not that far away. Give yourself a few extra minutes, ease off the gas, and take your time when the roads get icy.

The first slippery days of the season can catch us off guard, so let’s look out for each other. Be patient with the driver taking it slow, give pedestrians plenty of room, and keep an eye out for people walking along or crossing the road.

City crews will also be out as conditions change, working to keep roads safe and passable. Please give crews and equipment the space they need to work.

We’ve done this winter thing before. Slow down, give each other some room, and we’ll all get where we’re going.

P.S. We’re all for being neighbourly. But on icy roads, stopping unexpectedly to wave another vehicle into traffic isn’t the time for it. The driver behind you may not be able to stop as quickly as you did. Follow the right-of-way and save the kindness for helping your neighbour shovel or sand their steps and driveway.
