Volunteer Appreciation Awards Winners
February 16, 2022- Iqaluit, Nunavut
On February 10, the City of Iqaluit posted the digital presentation of the 2021 Volunteer Appreciation Awards. The Volunteer Awards highlight the contributions of outstanding community members. The 2021 Volunteer Award recipients were:
- Outstanding Volunteer Service Organization Award: The Iqaluit Angel Tree (Led by Tina Morrissey) for their compassion and generosity in supporting Iqaluit families during the holidays.
- Outstanding Volunteer Sports & Recreation Award: Iqaluit Breakers Swim Club Coaches (Sean and Steph Clark) Coaches for giving their time, effort and experience and for providing a safe and fun environment for the youth of Iqaluit to take part in a recreational swim club.
- Outstanding Volunteer Youth Award: Joseph Takpannie for his kind heart and ingenuity to gather and fix discarded bicycles from the landfill, to give to the kids of Iqaluit, so that they can have their own bike when riding around with their friends.
- Ikayuqtimarik Award (Good Helper Award): Elisapi Aningmiuq for her continued community engagement with multiple community groups to meet the needs of all Iqalummiut. Aningmiuq’s volunteering is varied and intersectional, the common theme is grass roots cultural and community work.
- Outstanding Volunteer Award for Arts & Culture: Matty McNair for her work with “Strings & Things”. Matty has been the volunteer host and facilitator of the community 'Strings & Things' evening music sessions for 24 years. This weekly evening of music is open to musicians of all levels from new beginner to experienced and all ages.
- Community Development: Jason Rochon for starting a food bank for children, 6 years ago, at the Joamie School. He recognized the need and took action. He knew children in his workplace needed access to food to take home for lunches or at the end of the day for dinner.
