Update Regarding August 24 Animal Control Incident

August 26, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

 

The City of Iqaluit has been advised by the RCMP that, based on its investigation, the incident does not involve criminal activity, and the file will be transferred to the City’s Municipal Enforcement Department for review under the City’s applicable animal control by-laws.

The RCMP has also advised the City that, based on the information gathered during its investigation, the dog was not at large at the time of the incident and was reportedly tethered.

The City is currently awaiting the formal transfer of the RCMP file and supporting information.

Once the file is received, Municipal Enforcement will review the information provided by the RCMP, conduct any further investigation that may be required, and respond to any applicable Public Health direction from the Government of Nunavut in accordance with the City’s by-laws and applicable territorial legislation.

As this matter will be under active review by Municipal Enforcement, the City will not comment further on the specific circumstances of the incident while that review and any related investigation are underway.

The City recognizes the seriousness of this incident and the concern it has caused within the community. A further public update will be provided when the Municipal Enforcement review is complete, or when additional information can appropriately be shared.
