Thanksgiving Weekend Road Safety Program
October 12th 2023 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement department in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) conducted random sobriety and road safety checkstops throughout the City of Iqaluit on the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Approximately 300 vehicles were checked throughout the operation. More then 20 vehicles were found to be operating without the required documents in the vehicle, along with expired registration, 5 vehicles were found with illegal coating of sunscreen or tint on their windows, 5 drivers were found operating their vehicle without carrying their driver’s license on them as required, along with various other traffic violations.

Most vehicles that approached the checkstop officers observed both driver and passengers were not wearing their seat belts, which is required under territorial and municipal law and subject to a $125.00 fine.

In addition 1 driver was issued a roadside suspension for drug impairment, 25 roadside mandatory alcohol screening demands were performed and 1 driver was charged with aggressive driving.

The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement department would like to thank the general public for their compliance in driving safe, and would like to remind the public if you suspect an impaired driver on the road to contact the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) at 867-979-1111 immediately.
