School bus safety
September 13th 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit would like to remind residents that with school back in full swing there is an increased amount of pedestrians and children on the roads.

Tips about road safety that should be discussed with your children before sending them out the door could help save lives.

For Children:
  • Be Visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing to make yourself visible to drivers.
  • Stay Alert: Pay attention to your surroundings and watch for traffic when walking to or from the bus stop.
  • Follow the Rules: Only cross the road at designated crosswalks and follow the bus driver's instructions.
  • Stay Safe at the Bus Stop: Avoid distractions like phones and stay with a group while waiting for the bus.
  • Arrive Early: Get to the bus stop a few minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
  • Stay Back: Keep a safe distance from the road and avoid playing near the bus stop.
  • Hold Someone's Hand: If you're younger, hold a parent's or guardian's hand when walking to or from the bus stop.
  • Follow Bus Rules: Listen to the bus driver and follow the rules on the bus, such as staying seated, arms inside the bus, etc.
  • Be Visible When Crossing: Make eye contact with drivers of stopped vehicles and use crosswalks or designated crossing areas.
  • Don't Cross Behind the Bus: Only cross in front of the bus where the driver can see you.
  • Stay Focused: Avoid distractions like phones or headphones when walking to or from the bus stop.

For Drivers:
  • Be Aware: Watch for school buses and children crossing the road, especially in school areas.
  • Stop for the Bus: When a school bus stops and displays its red lights and stop arm, come to a complete stop and wait for the bus to move again.
  • Slow Down: Reduce speed in school areas and residential areas where children may be present.
  • Be Patient: Don't try to pass a school bus, even if it's stopped in a traffic lane.

Remember it is illegal to pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing and stop sign activated. Drivers on both sides of the road must remain stopped until the flashing red lights are turned off.
Let’s keep our kids safe.
