City Statement Regarding Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society Info Session

The City of Iqaluit would like to address the recent public service announcement regarding our information session with elders on the topic of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). We understand that this announcement has generated a range of emotions within our community, and we want to clarify our intentions and express our commitment to the well-being of our residents.

Our primary goal in hosting this joint information session was to gather feedback and insights from our elders and the community at large. We recognize that Medical Assistance in Dying is an exceptionally sensitive and deeply personal subject, and it was never our intention to make any decisions on this matter. We deeply regret any offence or distress that our announcement may have caused.

The City believes in open and transparent community engagement; ensuring that the voices of our residents are heard on matters of importance. In light of the strong concerns expressed by the community, we have decided to reconsider the approach we have taken in conducting the information sessions.

We appreciate the feedback and concerns that have been shared with us, and we are committed to ensuring that our actions reflect the best interests of our citizens.

Thank you for your understanding.
