Caution During Spring Melt

With spring weather conditions upon us, the City of Iqaluit would like to remind residents of some of the dangers melting conditions can cause, especially for the younger members of our community.

Ditches that were covered with snow –and safe to walk over just a few days ago- can now be hollow underneath due to flowing melt water. For an adult, getting stuck waist deep in a ditch is an annoyance. For small children, it can be quite dangerous.

Public Works are currently clearing excess snow out of ditches to help the melting water flow easier.

Water rushing into culverts from the melting snow can also be potentially hazardous for children, and an accident can happen quickly. Please be mindful and alert of these changing weather conditions.

Please keep an eye out for our youngest residents as they enjoy the spring weather, and if you see one struggling to get unstuck, offer them a hand.
