Pet Waste: Less is More

June 12, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit is reminding residents to avoid overfilling garbage bags with pet waste.

Some bags are getting extremely heavy. We respect the commitment, but the bags do not.

When bags are too full, they can break during collection. Once they enter the garbage truck and are compacted, broken bags can spread waste through the back of the truck, creating unsafe and unsanitary conditions for collection crews.

Please keep bags at a manageable weight, mix pet waste with regular household garbage when possible, double-bag pet waste, or bring larger amounts directly to the landfill.

As a rule, if you're impressed by how much fit in the bag, you've probably put too much in the bag.

The City thanks residents for helping keep waste collection safe, clean, and as drama-free as garbage collection can reasonably be.
