Pedestrian Safety Reminder
July 29, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit would like to remind all residents and visitors to prioritize pedestrian safety on our roads. As our community grows and traffic increases, it is vital to ensure that everyone—drivers and pedestrians alike—stays safe.
Drivers:
- Yield to Pedestrians: Always yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
- Slow Down: Reduce your speed in areas with high foot traffic, such as crosswalks, schools, and residential areas.
- Stay Alert: Be extra cautious around children and elders, who may take longer to cross the street.
- Avoid Distractions: Keep your attention on the road, and avoid using mobile phones or other distractions.
Pedestrians:
- Use Crosswalks: Always use designated crosswalks and pedestrian signals when available.
- Make Eye Contact: Ensure you make eye contact with drivers before crossing to confirm they see you.
- Increase Visibility: Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially during darker hours.
- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as using mobile phones while crossing streets, and remain aware of your surroundings.
Both drivers and pedestrians should be particularly cautious during times of low visibility, such as early mornings, late evenings, and adverse weather conditions. Mutual awareness and respect can greatly enhance safety for everyone on our roads.
Your cooperation is crucial in making our community a safer place. By working together, we can protect our pedestrians and ensure a safe environment for all.
