New Domestic Animal Control By-law #924

The City of Iqaluit would like to advise residents that effective January 11, 2022 the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law No.796 was replaced with the Domestic Animal Control By-law No.924.

Notable changes include animal licensing at no charge, with the exception of any dog designated as Vicious.

• An owner of a designated “Vicious Dog” shall obtain an annual license at a fee of $250.00.
• Cost of replacing an animal tag is $15.00: a designated vicious dog replacement is $150.00.
• Impound fee for animals found running at large or impounded for any contravention under By-law No. 924 is $125.00 plus a daily $20.00 care and sustenance fee for a dog and $15.00 daily care and sustenance fee for a cat.
• Impound fee for a vicious dog found running at large or impounded for any contravention under By-law N0.924 is $250.00 and $20.00 daily care and sustenance fee.

The above impound fees increase in instances of subsequent impoundments within a 12-month period.

Subsequent impoundment fee for an animal within a 12- month period.
• 2nd offense $150.00
• 3rd offense $175.00
• 4th offense $200.00

Subsequent impoundment fee for a Vicious Animal within a 12- month period.
• 2nd offense $300.00
• 3rd offense $400.00
• 4th offense $500.00

Animal tags are available from City hall after completing the Animal Licensing Form.
