May 12th Structure Fire – Weekend Report
May 15, 2023 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

At 4:32p.m. on Friday May 12th, the Iqaluit Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 2400 area of Iqaluit (Tundra Valley). All fire crews and volunteers were immediately dispatched to the scene, along with Public Works water trucks. Municipal Enforcement were also on the scene to provide traffic control.

Fire crews were able to speak with people as they were leaving the building, and could confirm that all of the residents had made it out safely. There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters, and no adjacent buildings were damaged.
In addition to the structure fire, on the morning of May 13th ambulance crews responded to a resident suffering a heart attack. They were able to provide CPR with their new LUCAS CPR machine. The patient was transported to Qikiqtani General Hospital, and was sent to Ottawa in stable condition.

During the evening of Sunday May 14th, there was a second structure fire. A boarded up building in the 200 area of Iqaluit (Downtown Core) was discovered on fire, with heavy smoke escaping the building. Fire crews were able to locate and eliminate the fire quickly.

The City would like to thank the entire Fire team for their work this weekend, including water truck operators, QEC, RCMP, Municipal Enforcement, Public Works, Nunavut Office of the Fire Marshal, and volunteers and fulltime staff of Iqaluit Emergency Services. Thank you for your hard work.
