Iqaluit Fire Department responds to residential fire
At approximately 7:45 a.m. this morning Iqaluit Emergency Services was dispatched to a structure fire in the 2200 neighbourhood.
Thanks to neighbours, the fire was kept from spreading using multiple fire extinguishers before fire crews arrived to intervene. Firefighters found the exterior of a 4-plex was on fire along with significant amounts of storage against the front of the building. 11 firefighters and 4 emergency vehicles responded to the incident. The fire was quickly extinguished and there are no displaced occupants as a result of this fire. No injuries to staff or the public were reported.
Iqaluit Emergency Services would like to remind home owners, landlords and tenants that clear access to exterior stairs, landings and fire escapes must be maintained at all times for everyone’s safety. Storage of any garbage, recycling, construction materials or other flammable or combustible materials should be kept well away from the buildings perimeter. These items should be clear from underneath or on exterior staircases as this will block the occupants safe escape in case of fire. Storage on stairs will also impede first responders from gaining quick access for fires, paramedic or police assistance. Clearing these pathways and making our properties more fire safe will allow all emergency services to help you more quickly and safely in your time of need.
