Impaired Driving and Road Safety Enforcement

December 22, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement Department, in partnership with the Iqaluit RCMP, conducted random sobriety and road safety check-stops, along with roving patrols, throughout Iqaluit on the weekends of December 12–13 and 19–20.

Most drivers were found to be in compliance, carrying the required documentation and operating vehicles while sober. However, many drivers and passengers were observed not wearing seat belts, as required by both territorial and municipal laws. Seat belt violations carry a $125 fine.

Enforcement actions included:

·       Eight (8) 24-hour roadside suspensions for alcohol impairment

·       Five (5) 30-day roadside suspensions

·       Two (2) criminal charges for impaired driving

·       One (1) charge for refusal to provide a breath sample

Additional traffic violations addressed included:

·       Three (3) drivers disobeyed traffic control devices

·       Five (5) drivers were caught speeding: four between 17–29 km/h over the limit, and one between 30–40 km/h over

·       One (1) driver failed to yield to an emergency vehicle and fled

·       Multiple vehicles were operating without functioning headlights or taillights

·       Two (2) drivers were operating without valid registration or insurance and had misused validation stickers

·       Two (2) drivers were found without a valid driver’s licence

·       Four (4) vehicles were seized and impounded for related offences

Additionally, fifty-six (56) taxis and commercial vehicles were inspected during the initiative. Two (2) were found to have liquor on board contrary to territorial and municipal law. The alcohol was seized and both were charged accordingly.

The City of Iqaluit thanks residents for their cooperation and reminds the public to:

·       Always wear seat belts

·       Follow all traffic laws

·       Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs

To report impaired driving, contact the RCMP at 867-979-1111.

Let’s work together this holiday season to keep Iqaluit’s roads safe.
