Fire Prevention Week: Be Ready to Get Out
October 8, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
As Fire Prevention Week continues, the City of Iqaluit urges all residents to prepare and practise a home fire escape plan.
In an emergency, your first exit may be blocked by fire or smoke. That is why it's important to plan two ways out of every room in your home and ensure all household members know the escape routes.
Practise your escape plan regularly, especially with children, elders, or anyone who may need extra help. Choose a warm, safe meeting place nearby, such as a neighbour’s home or a vehicle, where everyone can gather once outside.
Make sure outerwear like coats and boots is stored near exits so it can be grabbed quickly during an emergency. Keep exits clear of snow, storage, or household items throughout the year to ensure they are accessible when needed.
A clear, well-practised escape plan can save lives.
More fire prevention tips will be shared throughout the week.
